Measure the Finished Lace, Not Just the Format Name
This page concentrates on the measurement and approval procedure for a finished wig. For a broader overview of lace materials and common coverage formats, see the Wig Lace Guide; for nominal format comparisons, see the lace types comparison.
A format label is a starting point. The useful area can differ once the lace is shaped, stitched into a cap and ventilated. Buyers should record the exact measurement points and photograph the approved sample from the same angle used in later QC.
Set Reference Points on the Cap
Width and depth
Identify the front edge, side boundaries and rear seam of the lace zone. On a curved frontal, state whether width is measured along the lace edge or as a straight horizontal projection. For depth, state the center-line path and where it ends at the cap join. A measurement without named reference points is hard to reproduce.
Usable parting area
Finished seams, dense edges or unsupported lace can reduce the space available for a practical part. Mark the zone that may actually be parted on the approved unit, separate from the nominal outer dimensions.
Check Shape and Symmetry
Lay the lace flat without stretching it. Compare the left and right side boundaries, temple curves, center line and rear seam. Then mount the wig on the agreed head form and repeat the check. A flat measurement alone may hide how the cap pulls the lace into shape.
Record the Inspection Method
- Identify the cap size and the actual sample or golden sample revision.
- Photograph the lace flat with a ruler next to, not pulling against, the edge.
- Record width, center depth, side depth and usable parting area with named points.
- Check the mounted shape and parting direction on the agreed head form.
- Inspect seams, ventilation and edge condition after normal handling.
- Agree any tolerance and inspection frequency in the final specification.
Dimensions, tolerances and inspection frequency are subject to the finished construction, sampling and project requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the printed lace size the same as usable parting space?
Not always. A finished seam or edge may reduce the practical parting zone.
Should curved width be measured along the edge?
The method should be specified; an edge measurement and a straight projection can differ.
Why check lace on a head form as well as flat?
The cap can change the lace shape and tension when mounted.
Who sets the acceptable tolerance?
Buyer and supplier should agree it in the approved product specification after sampling.
Use the agreed lace measurement and acceptance record when defining the finished wig construction. Review options for a specified wig collection and the sample approval and order-planning route when preparing the next project decision.
